SACAC

Each year the Human Relations Committee conducts an outreach program at schools in annual conference cities. Schools chosen for these projects have large populations of at-risk students who may need extra help in planning for their futures. These programs are funded by the Extending the Dream Grant and Camp College and Early Intervention Awards.

Extending the Dream Grants

The Extending Dreams program is a fund that enables members of the association to establish and pay for special outreach projects in their communities. These programs are designed for, but not limited to, at-risk students and their parents. Some of the programs that have been funded over the past five years are:
  • A Parents and Counselors Together (PACT) program in the Atlanta area.
  • Evening PACT programs for middle school parents and others who work with at-risk students.
  • College tours for students of promise.
  • Camp college programs in Chattanooga and Asheville.

Grants typically range from $1000-$1500, and only SACAC members are eligible. Typically the deadline falls two weeks prior to the annual SACAC conference, and unfortunately 2008 Extend the Dream Grant applications are no longer being accepted.

Camp College & Early Intervention Awards

NACAC offers Early Intervention Strategies for elementary, middle and high school students in an effort to provide broad outreach. The goal of this grant program is to expose students to elements of the college choice process and motivate them to see college as a viable educational option.

Last year, two programs were funded in the Southern region: the Camp College program sponsored by IMPACT, the Chattanooga Public Education Foundation's College Counseling Initiative, and the University of the South; and two Camp College programs hosted by UNC-Asheville, which involved students from Asheville as well as students participating in the ThinkCollege program in Charlotte, NC.
