Georgia is one of two states that do not provide need-based financial aid to support under-resourced students to attend college. In this session we’ll learn from rockstar SACAC members who have gone the extra mile to research and advocate for policy change to make Georgia a state that offers need-based financial aid to students.

The Horizon Award is a $1,000 scholarship which will be awarded to five high school seniors for one-time use at their chosen college or university. As a matching award, a college counselor or Community Based Organization advisor who has been nominated by each chosen student will receive $1,000 to be used towards professional development opportunities. Checking in at the half-way point of an enrollment cycle like none other, Admission professionals on both sides of the desk will discuss how their offices are navigating application review, campus tours, and affordability during an unprecedented time. Learn about the challenges and successes that admission professionals have experienced this past year, and the ways that we can support our students and colleagues during this time.

In this session we’ll learn from NACAC’s Executive Director for Educational Content and Policy, David Hawkins, about the student to counselor ratios in the state of Georgia compared to other US states.
With the support of the SACAC Grants and Fiscal Oversight Committee, the Counselor Participation Fund (CPF) provides financial assistance to SACAC members who have little or no funding to support their attendance at the Annual SACAC Conference or SACAC-sponsored summer professional development programs, Summer Seminar, Sweet Tea Tour, and Dry Run. Join colleagues from all sides of the desks for the 2021 virtual Georgia Legislative Day. This professional development event will include interactive legislative and policy updates and trainings followed by virtual meetings with your elected officials. It has never been more important to engage in advocacy efforts to help shape the policies that impact students and educators across Georgia. In addition to the official programming from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, there will be scheduled meetings with elected officials from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
