8:30 - 9:30 am Central Catering to the Needs of the Individual Student: Demonstrating Cultural Sensitivity in College Counseling
Acknowledging our students’ diverse backgrounds and unique experiences is necessary in building a comprehensive college counseling practice. This session seeks to highlight societal changes, trends, and patterns within our multicultural and diverse society. How do these influence our interactions with our students and the methods we bring to our individualized college counseling practices?
Presenters:
- Jessica Hardy, Director of College Guidance, St George's Independent School (Collierville, TN) (MEd Higher Ed - Northeastern University)
- Shelby Stone, College & Career Coordinator, Martha O'Bryan Center/Stratford High School (Nashville, TN) (MEd - Counselor Education/School Counseling & Guidance Service - Arkansas State University

9:45 - 10:45 am Central Analyzing our place and identity as college counselors
Assessing the current state of faculty and staff in a high school setting is not a new phenomenon. However, over the course of three short years, we have experienced societal and political issues, a pandemic, and witnessed an influx in issues related to mental health. While our primary role is to serve and nurture students, we must first take the time to adopt self-care strategies to resist burnout associated to the counselor role. Considering that our field is already yielding quicker turnover than ever seen before, this session is timely. We will analyze the climate of the profession, including self-care strategies and burnout prevention, specifically through the lens of high school college counselors in the state of Tennessee.
Presenters:
- Beverly Brooks, Director of College Counseling, St Mary's School (Memphis, TN) (MS - Education, Education, Culture & Society, University of Pennsylvania)
- Susan Bollinger, Director of College Counseling, Bearden High School (Knoxville, TN) (EdS - Counselor Education/School Counseling & Guidance Services, University of Tennessee, Knoxville; MEd - Higher Ed, Vanderbilt)
- Carol Ryan, University School of Jackson (Jackson, TN)
11:00 - 11:30 am Central Financial Aid: FAFSA Updates and Working with Special Student Populations*

Special populations will be discussed regarding the FAFSA dependency questions. As counselors, you will learn how to assist students on how to answer these questions and best resources for students answering “yes”.
Presenter:
- Jason Seay, Outreach Specialist, TSAC/THEC (Nashville, TN)
11:45 AM - 12:15 pm Central What’s Happening in Tennessee?*
